Vickie Lynn Baker, age 69, of Du Quoin, passed away peacefully at 5:01 pm on Sunday, February 4, 2024, at Marshall Browning Hospital in Du Quoin.
Vickie was born in Nashville, Tennessee on November 20, 1954, the daughter of Clay and Emma Lois (Robertson) Kemp. She married the love of her life, Louis Eugene “Louie” Baker in Smyrna, Tennessee on January 24, 1970. That day they were married in the firehouse by the fire chief, led to fifty-four years of marriage, wonderful memories, and a beautiful family she cherished more than anything.
In younger years, she received a degree as a medical transcriptionist and worked for Dr. Joseph Campanella. Vickie was instrumental in forming the Head Start Program for Du Quoin. She adored her job as an adult caregiver and chief cook for Gold Plate for many years. She did not do these things out of obligation, but because it was who she was.
Vickie enjoyed reading and spending time with her family. She and Louie spent countless nights as line-dancing partners, simply enjoying each other’s company. But, more than anything, Vickie was immensely proud of and adored her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The highest accomplishment any mother can obtain is to raise great children and make them proud to call her mom. She taught them that hard work pays off, while raising them with discipline, instilling this in all her boys. Vickie leaves behind a precious gift for her family, passed down from one generation to the next. It is her abiding legacy of unconditional love.
Survivors include her husband- Louie Baker of Du Quoin; son- Louie Baker Jr (Stephanie Ridgeway) of Du Quoin; son- Mitchell Baker (Kara) of Pinckneyville; son- Shane Baker (Dawn) of Pinckneyville; nine grandchildren- Nicole Rich (Charlie), Nathan Harris, Alyssa Morgan (Austin), Kayla Sprehe (Jacob), Rayce Baker (Elizabeth Barnes), Anthony Baker (Melissa), Jakeb Baker, Olivia Baker, and Alec Zander; seven great-grandchildren- Wyatt Robinson, Lucas Harris, Delijla Harris, Sophia Harris, Riley Rich, Reagan Rich, Kayden Sprehe, and baby Baylor Baker on the way; two sisters- Melissa Gannon and Wanda Kemp; brother- James Kemp; several nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters- Pamela and Patricia Kemp, and two brothers- Johnny and Bobby Kemp.
