Frank Samuel Campanella, age 89, of Du Quoin, passed away peacefully at 7:27 am on Tuesday, April 11, 2023, at Du Quoin Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center.
Frank was born in Willisville, Illinois on July 9, 1933 to Sam and Theresa (Messina) Campanella. He then moved to Steeleville where he graduated from High School and then moved to Texas where he served in the Air Force working as an airplane mechanic during the Korean Conflict at Sheppard Air Force Base. He married Mayetta M. Davis of Vergennes on April 16, 1955 and she survives. They had been together for 68 years.
Frank was the owner and operator of Frankie's Martin Service station in DuQuoin for over 30 years. If you are over 50, you may remember him bringing out bubble gum to the kids in the car as he performed full service: washing the windows, checking the oil, and filling your gas tank with regular or unleaded. He was also a farmer and an underground coal miner at Freeman United #6 in Waltonville, where he shoveled the belt, roof-bolted, and then passed the test to become an examiner.
His hobbies included spending time with family, dancing on Saturday nights, working in the garden and yard, fishing, hunting, vacationing at Daytona Beach, FL, collecting antiques and record albums, and going to the boat. He was an avid reader and kept up with all the world's news and happenings. He had a great big smile and a loud laugh. He never met a stranger.
He leaves behind his wife, Mayetta, one son, Frank Alan Campanella (Linda), two daughters, Theresa Horn (Jim) and Laura Krone (Tyler). Grandchildren include: James Campanella (Winter), Terry Campanella (Shea), Joseph Mason (Allison), Andrew Mason (Emily), Justin Horn (Katie), Cassandra Robinson, Riley Robinson (Heather), and Creedence Krone. He also was proud of all 19 of his great grandchildren. He also leaves behind two brothers, Sam Campanella (Marie) of Herrin, IL and Joe Campanella of Oblong, IL and one sister, Dee Campanella of OH.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Lucille Ballard of Memphis, TN, sister, Janet Asbury (Danny) of Steeleville, IL, sister, Mary Jo Rader (Ray) of DuQuoin and twin infant great grandchildren, Alexandria and William Campanella of Carterville.
