Douglas (Doug) Jay Dunmyer, age 62, of Tamaroa Illinois, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday evening, August 9, 2022, surrounded by his loving family.
Douglas was born in Du Quoin, Illinois on December 3, 1959. He was the son of Carolyn “Jean” (Trout) and James Dunmyer, Sr. He was preceded in death by both parents, his brothers James Dunmyer Jr. & William “Billy” Irvin, and his son, Timothy Dunmyer.
He is survived by the love-of-his-life—Mary Bovay-Dennison, step-mother- June Dunmyer; his children: Marcus Dunmyer, John Wesley Young III, Lydia Campbell (Kaleb), Riley Dunmyer, Leland Dunmyer, Matthew Dunmyer, Madison Dunmyer. His beloved grandchildren: Marcie Dunmyer, Christopher Dunmyer, John Wesley Young IV, Ariana Young, Amelia Campbell. His loving siblings: Leanna Dunmeyer Clark (Steve), Jeffrey Dunmyer (Tish), Jan Dunmyer Cloward, Robert Irvin, Cindy Pitman Irvin, Deborah Dunmyer, David Dunmyer (Chris), Karen Pohlmeier (Chad), Dale Dunmyer, Sarah Verbal (Luke), Paul George, and Elizabeth Fagerland (Brian), as well as several nieces and nephews he held dear.
Doug had served as a minister since the 1980’s, and through his relationships had the opportunity to perform many marriage ceremonies for couples who called Doug a cherished friend. A continuing student of scripture, Doug cherished his Bible and the living word of God. He is remembered for his superior oratory and teaching skills, as well as his wise counsel. Friends who have reached out have noted how Doug always had a kind and encouraging word to everyone he came in contact with.
Along with his faith in Jesus Christ, his other passion was wood working. Doug worked at Downs Furniture in Elkville, Illinois for 11 years; he owned and operated Dunmyer & Sons Refinishing for more than twenty years, and was widely known for his expertise craftsmanship and appreciation for detail. He was then a cabinet maker for a New Hampshire company, when he suffered an accident, leaving him disabled.
A thought of Doug brings to mind his positive outlook and life mantras: “Wouldn’t take nothin’ for my journey,” “It’s great to be alive,” and “simple truth.” He will be greatly missed by so many.
Per Doug’s wishes, cremation rites will be accorded. A service will be held at Grace Mission Church in Elkville, Illinois at 11am on Saturday, August 20, 2022 to honor his life. Joseph Dunmyer will officiate the service.
In lieu of flowers, Douglas requested that donations be made to Grace Mission Church in Elkville, Illinois. Maxton-Rosado Funeral Home in Du Quoin is assisting the family with final arrangements.
